St Malo, France

St Malo is a port town on the coastline of the English Channel (la Manche) and is the most visited city in Brittany.  Visitors come from Europe and from the US as well.  This citadel, built within fortified walls (St Malo intra muros) is a picturesque old town where you can spend hours just walking on cobblestone streets, soak in fantastic views of the old city and the bay by walking around the walls, or simply taking a dip in the sea.

Wishing you a great first week of July with the following pictures from St Malo.  Enjoy!

  • The first step in visiting St Malo, France is to get inside the tall walls (also called ramparts of St Malo).  There are a few entrances but the “Porte Saint-Vincent” (St Vincent Door) is the main entrance and has sustained the bombings of WWII.  This entrance dates back t0 1709.

  • The stone house below has an amazing view of the beach – priceless!  This is one of our favorites of the many stone houses inside the walls of St Malo.

  • One of the downsides of the beaches in St Malo is that the water can be quite cold, even in the summer.  But this does not prevent the “vacanciers de Juillet” (July vacationers) from swimming and sunbathing.  Now with the green flag and the St Malo baywatch crew on duty, those lucky swimmers feel really safe!

And the children have so much fun in the beach pool.  No chlorine and water heater needed here.  The saltwater beach pool is warmed up naturally by the sun and fills up with the tide.  And how about this diving platform, such wholesome fun!

  • In honor of the 4th of July, this St Malo bar-crêperie raised the American flag, what a nice touch!
