Bonjour and welcome to our photo gallery of living rooms with large windows – come on in! And as always, sharing “The Little Plus” (“Le Petit Plus”), hope you enjoy…
Whatever size living room you have, large windows are always a welcome feature, especially when there is something beautiful to see outside. Big windows serve to open up the space and allow natural light to stream in in abundance for a bright and airy feel. Natural light from a large window is also infinitely better than artificial lighting, it plays off colors beautifully (for fabulous photographs), and boost psychological and physical well-being (it is an all-natural happy vitamin). That’s reason enough for big windows, right? But there’s more. A large window is an accent in itself, it can be a dramatic focal point of the room. Floor-to-ceiling windows can connect and visually extend your living room outdoors, and frame stunning sunsets or twinkling cityscape at dusk. Window walls will also make you appreciate the raw beauty of the mountain or bring the serenity of a lake into your home. So transform your homes with large windows and see the magic happen.
If you want to put large windows in your home consider first where the lovely views are, so you can sweep the curtains aside to a beautiful picture every day. Or know where the sun rises so you can place a window there for sunny mornings, or avoid it altogether if you love waking up late. For small spaces – oversized sliding, folding, or French glass doors can double as large windows for an uninterrupted view of the garden, beach, or a mountain panorama. A bank of combination windows – accent windows flanking a larger picture window, or fixed windows paired with casements – are excellent choices that ensure structural integrity and energy efficiency. How about soaring cathedral windows that add a Gothic feel to the room? They work well with high vaulted ceilings and are perfect for featuring custom-stained glasswork. If you already have beautiful windows with a gorgeous view to boot, you may want to keep the decor simple and uncluttered. Want to play with colors with your bright and sunny windows? How about white and light neutral tones that can open up your living room some more. You can go tropical and sunny with green paired with warm colors, or go coastal with shades of blue with white and maybe a hint of red. Earthy and natural tones also work great with large windows, more so if there are exposed beams and a rustic stone fireplace. Dramatic window treatments like patterned draperies or billowing chiffon can further draw attention to the windows, making them the star of the living room.
So let’s take a tour of some living rooms with large windows and we hope you will be inspired by our hand-picked selection of beautiful photos. Enjoy the visit and beautiful day to you!
1. Bamboo Screen…
The Little Plus: the abundance of beautiful transom windows! Window walls give a dramatic backdrop and a lush view of the garden beyond, not to mention lots of bright sunshine. Natural eco-friendly bamboo blinds are the perfect filters when you want to tone down all of that sunny goodness. And like partners in style, a pair of light pink ottomans are plush enough for added seating or a display of fresh flowers on a tray. Plump armchairs invite you to read the morning papers with a tumbler of freshly squeezed orange juice. As light as the rest of this room’s palette, the white-tiled floor wraps the whole look of this craftsman-style living room.
2. Prairie House…
The Little Plus: the wood-framed windows that create a floor-to-ceiling wall of light. And those eye-catching wooden ceiling details that connect to the prairie glass windows, so unique! As an alternative to an accent wall, a large art piece with subtle shades completes the earth-tone palette of this living room. And subdued light from the wall sconces gives a cozy and warm ambiance that invites you to lounge on one of the sofas with a cup of jasmine tea.
3. Panoramic View…
The Little Plus: the floor to ceiling curved windows. Maximizing the breathtaking mountain view of this ski chalet, the wide wood trim in a rich dark finish sets off the snow-covered tableau and gives a perfect contrast of light and dark. A natural stone fireplace with elevated hearth exudes warmth and comfort while the stone tiled flooring and wood-planked ceiling contribute to the rustic appeal of the room. Hot toddy, anyone?
4. Azure Elegance…
The Little Plus: the Hamptons-inspired azure blue of the armchairs, cushions, and the rug. White walls and ceiling paired with the blue accents give a bright and fresh coastal vibe that envelopes the living room. And notice how the coffered ceiling ties seamlessly with the light wooden floorboards! A well-placed large mirror reflects the view of the harbor, brings in more natural light, and manages to expand the room visually. Don’t forget your sunscreen as you walk out of the sliding doors to the sunning deck that functions as an extension of the living area. Ahoy!
5. Gentle Arches…
The Little Plus: the arches and stone columns on the terrace perfectly aligned with the windows. This series of graceful arches frame a gorgeous lake and mountain panorama from the sunroom. Just breathtaking! And notice the rounded shape of the room and how the tufted loungers and oval ottomans complement it with their curves. Exposed wooden ceiling beams offer contrast with its sleek and straight lines. A gleaming enamel and chrome freestanding heater is on standby, ready to keep you warm as you spend a relaxing afternoon gazing out to the serene view.
6. Palladian Renaissance…
The Little Plus: the French doors topped with arched transom windows. Notice how stone columns support the archways, mirroring the look of the patio. The elegant sweep of the arches frames the view of magnificent sunsets as Medieval-style candelabra chandeliers bathe the living room with warm (faux) candlelight. Keeping a watchful eye over the space is a carved lion above the stone fireplace with lovely herringbone-patterned firebox. Old-world beautiful!
7. Black & White Minimalism…
The Little Plus: the black steel-framed windows offer a stark contrast to the white walls. The arched top, wide design, and dramatic grid pattern inevitably draw the eyes out to the view. Adding an extra dimension of texture are the plush and comfy velvet and leather couches in black. A metal center table continues the minimalist and modern scheme of the room while a ribbon fireplace gives a hygge-like quality and looks right at home surrounded by the black and white tones.
8. Gothic Bow…
The Little Plus: the full-height cathedral windows soaring in its elegant Gothic design. Beautiful and dramatic, the rounded window alcove is a romantic and light-filled nook that could house a pianoforte (or a golden harp perhaps?). An octagon-shaped coffered ceiling caps the vertical expanse and is accented by bronze antique chandeliers that match the wall sconces. Stately and grand in all its opulent trimmings!
9. Hangout by the Windows…
The Little Plus: the window casing, sliding door frame, coffered ceiling frame, and large baseboards – all in white! These treatments lighten up the room and flawlessly tie the room together with that white Scandinavian style of magic. Light color fabric ottoman and armchairs with nailhead trim match the gentle shades of this intimate space. And the recessed lighting adds warmth to the room as it accents the built-in matte wood cabinetry and aged wood floorboards.
