La Poste (Postal Services): Bringing Love Across the Atlantic

Email is a great way to stay in touch, we love it! But a handwritten letter can bring so many memories that on special occasions (or any time really), you are sure to touch a loved one’s heart with a letter. Did you know that it was today in 1930 (May 12, 1930) that French pilot Jean Mermoz made the first south Transatlantic postal flight (première liaison postale transatlantique) between  Saint-Louis (Sénégal) and Natal (Brazil). The non-stop journey was about 2,000 miles (3 200 km) and took 21 hours. It takes less time for letters to cross the Atlantic nowadays and if you don’t have time for a letter, picking up the phone is just as thoughtful and even faster!
