Fresh Gariguette Strawberries from farmers market in France
Today, we are offering a tip straight from the farmers market — how to choose the best strawberries, wash them so they retain their full flavor and also store them if you can’t eat them right away. Check out our Art of the Home tips below for more details.
- Picking Strawberries: The first step in picking flavorful strawberries is to pick smaller ones. Indeed, the bigger ones are more likely to be less juicy, be less scented and be hollow. Also, they will not continue to ripe once picked so make sure you pick strawberries that are already ripe (uniform shiny red color, and green caps).
- Washing Strawberries: the key is to not soak strawberries in water — simply rinse them quickly under water and dry them out with a paper towel. Also critical is to keep the green top while washing otherwise they will soak up the water and lose their flavor.
- Storage: strawberries are best enjoyed on the day of purchase. However if you need to store them, place them at the bottom of the fridge but they should be eaten within a couple of days. Enjoy and bon appétit!
