This is the time of the year when the love bugs are spreading so we thought we would highlight four natural remedies we’ve used for years to sooth a dry cough. In fact, we recently practiced all of these 4 tips with a dear loved one. So check out our Art of the Home natural homemade remedies, including how you can use your tea kettle to get relief. And even if you don’t need it now, keep it in mind, it may be useful to you or a loved one over the winter to get some rest at night when a dry cough is keeping you awake. Take good care!
4 Natural Remedies to Relieve and Sooth a Dry cough
- Inhalation: boil water in your tea kettle or in a small pot. Put the boiling water in a narrow bowl about half full, put your head on top on the bowl and place a towel on top of your head (so you can catch the steam as you breath in with your nose and mouth). Take deep breaths with your nose and mouth (alternate or do one or the other depending on what makes you feel better). When the steam is gone, refill the bowl. We do up to 4 refills for each session but even just one helps. An consider this: with the steam, you get a free facial at the same time – love that!
- Double pillows: elevate your head at night with pillows to minimize drips in the back of your throat which cause incessant night coughing leading to more throat irritation.
- Honey Miracle: dilute 1 tsp of honey in a warm clear liquid (tea, hot cider, etc.). Check more info on this old grandma’s home remedy (remède de grand-mères) in our article How to use Honey to Sooth a Sore Throat and Stop a Cough
- Gift from Switzerland: to prevent throat irritation that often occurs with persistent dry cough, try some naturally soothing and refreshing Ricola cough drops.
